The world of internet has given a way to people to claim expertise in
professions they don’t know much about. A very obvious
example is the design field where a huge number of people are claiming to be
“logo designers”. What we need to analyze is the
face that how many of them know about branding and creating brand identities? Do
they possess any practical experience at
all? Do they have the knowledge and qualification needed to create brand
identities for companies? One simple answer to all
these questions is: We have no clue about it.
Then, why do people claim to be logo designers when they don’t know about the
logo design industry and its purpose? The sad
part is that people actually hire them too. This must be due to the facts that
there are a lot of misconceptions that have
changed the perception of people in terms of how they look at branding and the
design industry. Due to these misconceptions,
amateur designers call themselves professional designers and business owners and
website owners even hire these designers.
So, let’s now take a look at these common misconceptions about logos that are
very common these days.
Number 1 Misconception is that you can fire up any design software and start
designing a logo that YOU think will be
suitable. People think that creating a logo is a graphic design task. This is
also a great misconception which leads them to
hire unprofessional and unskilled designers. A logo design process never starts
with Photoshop. You have got to use a pencil
and paper first and then evaluate what the company is about and what the
potential buyers may expect. Hence, just creating a
graphic design is not right and this is why a lot of businesses fail – yes, due
to poor branding.
Number 2 Misconception is that your logo must look beautiful in order to be
successful. Yes, a lot of clients also tell their
designers to create a beautiful logo design that people will look at and say
Wow. Well, there is nothing wrong with creating
a beautiful logo, in fact, your logo must look good. But, the fact of the matter
is that your logo needs to not just look
pretty, it should actually represent your business professionally. If you look
at the big brands like Target, Toyota, Dell,
etc. you will notice that their logos are simple and they convey a very powerful
message in a very professional way.
Number 3 Misconception is that all the logos are created the same way. Some
people may even limit this to the designer’s mind
who they hire. Whatever strikes the designer is the way to go is not the right
way of branding. When you look at the logos of
big brands, do you find anything similar? Or, do you feel that they have their
own unique touch and they all represent their
companies in a stylish way?
So, folks, whether you are a designer or a client looking for a logo design, you
must always try to avoid such
misconceptions.
